Seven Tamil rebels killed in attack

JAFFNA, Sri Lanka, May 5 (UPI) -- Seven Tamil rebels were killed and two Sri Lankan soldiers injured in a rebel attack on soldiers in the northern area of the uneasy Jaffna peninsula.

Thursday evening Tamil rebels traveling in two three-wheeler vehicles flung hand grenades at a military checkpost in the Tamil-dominated region. Two government soldiers were injured, the Colombo Page online newspaper reported.

In retaliation, troops at the adjoining Navindil camp blocked the vehicles and opened fire, killing seven of the rebel attackers.

Earlier Thursday, twin explosions killed two and wounded 14 others in another district of northern Sri Lanka.
