TEL AVIV, Israel, May 5 (UPI) -- The price of bread was the issue as the Israeli government faced its first no-confidence motion Friday, a day after Prime Minister Ehud Olmert was sworn in.
The Likud Party submitted the motion to protest a 7 percent increase in the price of bread, the newspaper Ha'aretz reported.
"The government's first move is to hurt the lower classes and break promises it gave voters," said Gideon Sa'ar, head of the Likud caucus in the Knesset.
The price increase was also blasted by members of parties in the governing alliance with Olmert's Kadima Party. Industry, Trade and Labor Minister Eli Yishai of Shas said he would investigate whether the price could be rolled back, and Shelly Yachimovitz, a Labor member of the Knesset said the increase raises doubts about Olmert's fight against poverty.
The Knesset scheduled a special session for Sunday to deal with the price increase.
