Defiant Moussaoui away to life in prison

ALEXANDRIA, Va., May 4 (UPI) -- Al-Qaida terrorist Zacarias Moussaoui was formally sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison, and left the Virginia court cursing the United States.

U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema Thursday approved the sentence a 9-man, 3-woman jury handed down Wednesday afternoon in Alexandria, Va.

"God curse America. God bless and save Osama bin Laden -- you will never get him," Moussaoui yelled. "You (United States) think you rule the world -- you are wrong. I will prove it."

CNN said the 37-year-old Moroccan-born Moussaoui will most likely be shipped to the federal Supermax prison facility in Florence, Colo., where he would be in lockdown in solitary confinement for 23 hours of every day, with one hour of recreation by himself each day.

The jury spent a week deliberating and had the option of imposing a death sentence, which would have required a unanimous vote.

Moussaoui was arrested three weeks before the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and either lied about, or withheld evidence that could have reduced or averted the nearly 3,000 deaths.
