MADRID, May 3 (UPI) -- The cost of olive oil is skyrocketing in Spain, the EFE news agency reported, with prices rising to $5.67 per liter, up from $3.95 a liter last year.

The rising price has spawned recent organized crime. In recent months some 500,000 liters have been stolen from olive oil plants in Andalusia.

In a more recent raid, thieves reportedly stole 100,000 liters of olive oil by siphoning it into waiting trucks.

Police are mounting increased patrols to prevent the oil theft.
