SAO PAULO, April 26 (UPI) -- Brazil said it would not intervene in the dispute among Venezuela, Peru and Colombia regarding trade relations the latter two have with the United States.
Earlier this month Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said he was pulling out of the Andean Community of Nations, a trade bloc of all three nations and Bolivia, saying it was superfluous now that Peru and Colombia has negotiated trade deals with the United States.
In a meeting with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva Tuesday, Colombian President Alvaro Uribe asked Lula to intervene in the dispute that erupted among the nations after Chavez announced Venezuela would leave the bloc, O Estado de Sao Paulo reported.
"Peru and Colombia took these decisions [to enter into bilateral agreements with the United States] as sovereign countries with legitimate governments," said Brazilian presidential spokesman Marco Aurelio Garcia.
