School lunches pack mixed results

NEW YORK, April 16 (UPI) -- Nearly three years after New York City vowed to battle childhood obesity by overhauling school lunches, some meals are still packed with calories and fat.

The New York Daily News tested the nutritional value of an entire week's worth of food from the city's official cafeteria menu at elementary and middle schools.

The five meals, when analyzed as a whole, were fairly healthy, averaging 502 calories, 30 percent of which came from fat -- narrowly complying with federal guidelines.

But at least two of the meals in the study had far more fat than most children should be eating in a single meal, the newspaper reported.

School lunches are healthier than they used to be -- and school chefs are continuing to improve the menu -- said David Berkowitz, who runs the SchoolFood program for the city's public school system.
