Egypt frees more than 900 militants

CAIRO, April 12 (UPI) -- Egypt has freed more than 900 Islamic militants from prison, including those from a group accused of assassinating Egyptian President Anwar Sadat in 1981.

The Interior Ministry said the releases have been going on for several days and included members of the violent Gamaa Islamiya group, the BBC reported.

Attacks blamed on the group include the November 1997 assault at Luxor, in which 58 people, most of them foreign tourists, were killed.

The BBC said the group had been largely crushed by the security forces before it declared a cease-fire in 1999, and some of its leaders renounced violence.
