Report: London bombers were on their own

LONDON, April 10 (UPI) -- A report on last year's London Transport attacks says the bombers planned the operation themselves with no direct help from al-Qaida, The Observer reports.

"The London attacks were a modest, simple affair by four seemingly normal men using the Internet," a government source told the newspaper.

The four bombers set off knapsacks packed with explosives on three trains and a bus, killing 52 people. There has been speculation about a fifth bomber because a knapsack full of explosives was found in the group's car, which was parked at a suburban station, but the report discounts that possibility.

The report was prepared by the Home Office for Home Secretary Charles Clarke.

Patrick Mercer the Conservative Party's spokesman on internal security, said that the report raises questions, including why one of the bombers was free to plan and carry out an attack when he had been identified as a potential terrorist months before.
