TAMPA, Fla., March 22 (UPI) -- U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris, R-Fla., says she's willing to sell off her possessions in her campaign to win a U.S. Senate seat.
Harris -- best known for her role as Florida secretary of state during the state's 2000 presidential vote-counting controversy -- is running for the Republican nomination to challenge incumbent Sen. Ben Nelson, a Democrat. It is considered an uphill fight, as a recent poll had Nelson up by 22 percentage points.
Harris is also battling news that court documents linked her, through campaign donations, to a defense contractor who has pleaded guilty to bribing a former member of Congress, Randy "Duke" Cunningham, R-Calif.
To prove she is serious, Harris last week promised to use $10 million of her own money in the campaign. In an appearance Tuesday on ABC's "Nightline" she said she would sell all of her personal assets -- but not her husband's -- in the quest for the Senate.
"I am willing to take this widow's mite, this pearl of great price, and put everything on the line," she said. "No matter how much you have, are you willing to take what you have and sell it all for a great price?"
