Biographer: Queen upset by Diana eulogy

LONDON, March 16 (UPI) -- A royal biographer reports that Queen Elizabeth was upset over Princess Diana's brother's eulogy at her funeral because he failed to honor her memory.

Earl Charles Spencer, the queen's godson, gave a controversial eulogy in Westminster Abbey, describing his sister as hounded by the news media and criticizing the royal family by suggesting they are "immersed by duty and tradition." Thousands of people outside the abbey who heard the eulogy applauded at the end.

"Spencer was so busy knocking the press and insulting the royals, he left himself no time to pay proper tribute to Diana's manifold gifts and achievements," Gyles Brandreth said in an article in The Spectator. "The queen (who takes her religion seriously) was especially saddened by the fact that her godson failed to acknowledge the importance to Diana of her personal faith."

Brandreth, author of "Philip and Elizabeth: Portrait of a Marriage," talked to several members of the queen's closest circle of friends, the Times of London reported. They included Anthony Armstrong-Jones, who is the Earl of Snowdon and the queen's former brother-in-law, and the widow of Earl Louis Mountbatten.
