Cold weather, snow hits California

LOS ANGELES, March 11 (UPI) -- The mountains of southern California were snowbound Saturday with snowfall occurring as low as 2,000 feet.

In Los Angeles, the weather has been chilly with temperatures dropping to 46 degrees F, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The dry chilly weather is the result of a La Nina with water temperatures below average along the Pacific Coast of South America.

The snow forced the closing of a number of mountain roads in both southern and northern California. The Grapevine, a steep section of Interstate 5 across Tejon Pass at the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley has been closed intermittently.

The weather also affected the insect world. Ken Gosting, who monitors traffic conditions in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, told the Times that the sudden drop in temperatures was lethal for bees.

"Bees were coming out to pollinate the wildflowers and they just got zapped," Gosting said. "It was amazing to watch bees just drop in mid-flight... it was so cold. There were bee carcasses lying all over the place."
