DeLay advances in Republican primary

AUSTIN, Texas, March 8 (UPI) -- Former House Majority Leader Rep. Tom DeLay, R-Texas, has defeated three challengers in a primary to secure a spot on the November ballot.

His main rival was Tom Campbell, a soft-spoken lawyer who ran one TV spot that featured voters saying "integrity" over and over, the Dallas Morning News reported Wednesday.

DeLay was indicted Sept. 28 in Austin on campaign finance fraud charges he calls politically motivated, and resigned as House majority leader in January.

After casting his primary-election vote, DeLay returned to Washington, where he cast an evening vote on the Patriot Act.

In November, DeLay will face Democratic Rep. Nick Lampson, who was affected by the redistricting DeLay engineered two years ago.

"We're seeing scandal after scandal," Lampson told supporters Tuesday night. "Americans are ready for a change."
