Ports outcry has Doles on opposite sides

CHARLOTTE, N.C., March 6 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole says she and her lobbyist husband, former Sen. Bob Dole are not at odds over the ongoing ports controversy, only on opposite sides.

The one-time presidential candidate's law firm, Alston & Bird counts among its clients Dubai Ports World, the United Arab Emirates company that is embroiled in debate over security concerns in a deal to manage six major U.S. seaports.

Sen. Dole, R-N.C., told the Charlotte (N.C.) Observer she and her husband have never discussed the issue, even though as a member of two Senate committees looking into the deal, she has questioned the Bush administration's decision to not take more time to consider national security implications.

"I don't know what clients his law firm has," she said. "I represent the people of North Carolina. If Bob Dole and I were to disagree, it wouldn't be the first time."
