Probation for teen's dad in fatal crash

PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 28 (UPI) -- A Philadelphia-area man who allowed his unlicensed 15-year-old daughter to take the wheel resulting in a fatal accident has been sentenced to probation.

In sentencing, Common Pleas Court Judge Benjamin Lerner said Richard Miller, 47, had "led not just a good life but an exemplary life," the Philadelphia Inquirer reported Tuesday.

"This is not a case where incarceration is called for or appropriate," Lerner said.

Miller and his daughter, Megan, were in the family car on April 17 when he suggested she get behind the wheel for a driving lesson at a high school parking lot.

The girl apparently confused the accelerator and brake and the car crashed through the school fence, crossed a street and struck Sarah McGinley, 18, who was playing with her infant daughter on a lawn. The child was not injured.

Miller had pleaded guilty one count of involuntary manslaughter and his daughter earlier pleaded guilty to felony charges of causing a fatal accident without a proper license. She was placed on interim probation and ordered to perform 200 hours of community service.

The victim's relatives said they are pursuing a civil lawsuit, the report said.
