Archbishop of York attacks Blair

LONDON, Feb. 24 (UPI) -- John Sentamu, the Ugandan-born Archbishop of York, says British Prime Minister Tony Blair endorses "Idi Amin-style" practices by the United States.

Sentamu believes Blair should have taken a stronger stand against the U.S. detention center at Guantanamo, the Times of London reported. The prime minister called it an "anomaly."

"By declaring 'war on terror' President Bush is perversely applying the rules of engagement that apply in a war situation," Sentamu said. "But the prisoners are not being regularly visited by the Red Cross or Red Crescent, which is required by the Geneva Convention. They were not even allowed to be interviewed by the U.N. human rights group."

Blair has been under fire in Britain for his stance. He fired back at a news conference, talking of "the human rights of the rest of us to live in safety."

Blair may even be getting criticism at home. His wife, Cherie Booth, is giving a speech next week at a conference with the title "Torture: Do the rules still matter?"

Human Rights Watch, which has been critical of Blair, is one of the sponsors of the conference.
