Half of SKorean youths will support North

SEOUL, Feb. 22 (UPI) -- A poll in South Korea found nearly 50 percent of the youth would support North Korea in the event of a unilateral U.S. attack.

The Korea Times poll of 1,000 Koreans ages 18 to 23 showed there has been a shift from South Korea's traditional alliance with the United States, with younger South Koreans saying their country needs to be more assertive in the world, the Financial Times reported.

The survey found 48 percent of respondents said if the United States attacked nuclear facilities in North Korea without South Korea's consent, their country should act on North Korea's behalf to demand that the United States stop its action.

Some 40 percent said South Korea should stay neutral and 11 percent supported going along with the United States.

Almost 40 percent said China should be South Korea's top diplomatic priority, the report said.
