Large bloc of voters say Blair should go

LONDON, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- A British poll finds 41 percent of voters think Prime Minister Tony Blair should step aside this year, ceding Labor Party leadership to Gordon Brown.

Brown, the chancellor of the exchequer, is Blair's acknowledged heir.

The poll, done for the Sunday Times of London, found that with Brown as leader, 43 percent of the electorate would support Labor to 37 percent for the Conservatives under David Cameron. Brown seems to be especially appealing to members of the Liberal Democrat Party.

Labor recently suffered a crushing defeat in a by-election in the Scottish parliamentary district where Brown maintains a home, with the Liberal Democrats overcoming what had been an 11,500-vote Labor majority.

Brown, a hardliner on national security, is scheduled to give a major speech Monday where he may call for a revival of 90-day detentions for suspects.
