Iraqi officials ratify election results

BAGHDAD, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- Iraqi officials have certified the results of parliamentary elections, setting the country on a course for forming a new, permanent government.

At the same time, there was more violence reported and kidnappers of American journalist Jill Carroll issued a new deadline for killing her if their demands were not met.

The certification of the election began a series of deadlines that requires political leaders to choose a president, a prime minister and a cabinet within two months, the New York Times said.

The final election results, announced at a news conference in Baghdad, were unchanged from preliminary ones announced in January, in which an alliance of Shiite parties won the single largest portion in the 275-seat Parliament.

Meanwhile, Al Rai, a satellite television station in Kuwait, reported that captors of American journalist Carroll set a Feb. 26 deadline to kill her. Demands reportedly now call for the release of only one Iraqi woman from prison, rather than all women in prison.
