LORETTO, Pa., Feb. 10 (UPI) -- Former Connecticut Gov. John Rowland walked out of a federal prison in Pennsylvania early Friday.
In a statement released through a friend, Rowland promised to "try to be a better person, and show my family, friends and the people of Connecticut how truly sorry I am for letting them down," the New York Times reported. He said his initial plans are to spend a few days of "quiet time" with his wife, Patty, before going home.
Rowland, a Republican, resigned on July 1, 2004, and pleaded guilty six months later to conspiracy, admitting that he accepted gifts and kickbacks from contractors doing business with the state.
After being in prison since April 1, 2005, Rowland must spend three years on supervised release to complete his sentence.
