President Carter's son enters Senate race

CARSON CITY, Nev., Feb. 7 (UPI) -- Another political dynasty could be in the making as Jack Carter, son of President Jimmy Carter, announces he's running for the U.S. Senate from Nevada.

Carter's parents were at his side Monday when he announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination in Carson City, the Reno Gazette-Journal reported. Many people in the crowd of about 350 had come to see the former president and were disappointed when he did not speak.

Carter, who moved to Nevada only three years ago, is the only declared Democrat in the race so far. U.S. Sen. John Ensign is seeking a second term.

Carter attacked the Bush administration for its failure to provide prompt aid in Hurricane Katrina and for the stalemate in Iraq. He attempted to tie Ensign to Bush.

Carter is well behind Ensign in the polls and in fundraising. Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman is reportedly also considering entering the Democratic primary.
