American Airlines cancels Haiti flights

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- American Airlines has canceled flights to and from Haiti ahead of next week's elections for fear of escalated violence during the voting.

Tim Wagner, spokesman for the airline, said that cancellations were a precaution to protect passengers, crew and other American employees.

"We took a look at the history of unrest coinciding (with elections), and there is definitely a history there," Wagner told The Miami Herald Thursday.

Next Tuesday millions of Haitians are scheduled to head to the polls to elect a new leader, as well as deputies and senators.

American canceled it flights to and from Haiti in the weeks leading up to the departure of former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, who left the country while armed rebels were taking over the country.
