Chile questions ex-Peruvian president

SANTIAGO, Chile, Feb. 1 (UPI) -- Chilean judicial officials have questioned former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori about human rights violations and other charges he faces.

Judge Orlando Alvarez conducted the questioning, intended to determine whether he will send Fujimori to Peru to face possible criminal prosecution, El Mercurio reported Wednesday.

The former Peruvian leader fled his country in 2000 amid a corruption scandal and allegations he ordered the deaths of political opponents.

He returned from exile in Japan in November, hoping to contend for the Peruvian presidency again in upcoming elections, but was arrested in Chile before he could fly into Lima.
