Son of Sam sues former attorney

NEW YORK, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- David Berkowitz, known as Son of Sam -- the killer of six in New York City nearly 30 years ago -- is suing his former attorney.

Berkowitz, serving 25 years to life for killing six people and wounding seven, has accused Hugo Harmatz of taking his personal belongings -- such as his bar mitzvah photographs, typewriter and pictures of his mother -- the New York Daily News reported Saturday.

Berkowitz, scheduled to testify in the suit Monday via conference call from his upstate New York prison cell, claims Harmatz tricked him into turning over his belongings so the lawyer could write the book, "Dear David," which was published last year.

Harmatz has said Berkowitz had given him the material willingly when he visited him in prison.

Should Berkowitz win any monetary award as a result of the civil lawsuit, he is barred by New York's Son of Sam law from profiting from his killings.
