Israeli forces kill local Hamas leader

JERUSALEM, Jan. 17 (UPI) -- The head of Hamas in Tul Karem reportedly was killed by Israeli Defense Forces after he opened fire on them while evading arrest.

Tabeth Salah a Din was responsible for refurbishing Hamas' structure in Tul Karem and in recent weeks had been involved in preparing bombs used in attacks against Israel, The Jerusalem Post reported.

Brandishing an AK-47 and Uzi machine gun in either hand, he opened fire at troops while attempting to flee the area, the newspaper said. An IDF soldier was slightly wounded.

Israeli forces say they uncovered a bomb factory that contained 22 pounds of explosives, homemade bombs and electrical detonation components.

A Hamas spokesman in area told al-Jazeera reporters that the group planned on avenging his death, the Post said.
