M.L. King's widow makes surprise visit

ATLANTA, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- Guests at an Atlanta commemorative dinner for the late civil rights advocate Martin Luther King Jr., had a surprise visit from his widow, Coretta Scott King.

Scott King, who suffered a stroke and heart attack last August, unexpectedly appeared at the annual Salute to Greatness dinner for about 1,500 King Center supporters in Atlanta on Saturday night.

King's four children are split over whether to sell the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Non-Violent Social Change facility to the federal government.

The absence of Martin Luther King III and Bernice King -- neither wants the building should be sold -- from Saturday night's festivities signal how deep the division runs, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

The 20th annual federal holiday set aside to honor King's life and work before he was assassinated in 1968 is Monday.
