Electoral board says Fujimori can't run

LIMA, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- Peru's national electoral board has ruled that former President Alberto Fujimori cannot run for the office in the April election.

Fujimori's daughter filed a petition for him, the BBC reported. The former president is in detention in Chile awaiting a hearing on Peru's extradition request.

After his stint as president ended in scandal in 2000, Fujimori fled to Japan to escape prosecution on corruption and human rights charges.

A spokesman said that Fujimori plans to appeal the board's ruling. A total of 24 candidates for president have declared themselves, the largest field in years.
