Thai fishermen admit to killing tourist

BANGKOK, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Two fishermen in Thailand confessed Monday to abducting, raping and killing a woman from Wales as she walked on a beach.

The men, 23 and 24, were arrested around 2 a.m. at a pier in Koh Samui, The Telegraph reported. They were flown to Bangkok, where police were able to match their DNA with evidence found on Katherine Horton's body.

Police quoted the men as saying on New Year's Day they beat the 21-year-old backpacking Cardiff college student with a wooden club, raped her and threw her body in the sea. The suspects were allegedly drunk at the time of the killing.

Her body was found the next day floating off a beach near the Koh Samui Island Resort, CNN said.

After Horton's body was found, Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra demanded that her killers be found, saying the publicity was damaging the country's image and tourism industry.

Police Gen. Preophan Dhamapong said the two could face execution if convicted.
