Saudi King offers to fix 1656 mosque

NEW DELHI, Jan. 4 (UPI) -- Badly needed repairs to a 350-year-old mosque in India will be covered by Saudi Arabia's King Abdallah if Indian officials accept the offer.

The BBC reports Abdallah has also offered to fund education in India.

Ahmed Bukhari, Imam of the historic Jama Masjid -- Grand Mosque -- said he received the offer from Abdallah and directed him to the Indian government.

Bukhari said the mosque needs its minarets, tombs and other structural parts repaired.

The mosque was built in 1656 by the man who built the Taj Mahal, Mughal emperor Shah Jahan.
