BOGOTA, Dec. 22 (UPI) -- A former Colombian minister was charged with plotting the assassination of a former presidential candidate 16 years ago, El Tiempo reported Thursday online.
Ex-Justice Minister Alberto Santofimio Botero allegedly orchestrated the death of Luis Carlos Galan at a rally in Bogota.

Santofimio Botero was reportedly a close associate of Colombia's one-time most notorious drug trafficker, Pablo Escobar.
Galan hailed from the former minister's Liberal Party and was leading the polls at the time of his death, running on an anti-corruption platform.
