France considers how to target terrorists

PARIS, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- France may give police power to target and hold terrorism suspects longer under a proposed tough anti-terrorist bill.

The proposal comes as French authorities conducted raids in and around Paris that resulted in the arrests of at least 20 people. The raids were described as a "major operation aimed at disbanding an Islamist network linked to terrorism," the BBC reported.

Some of the suspects are believed to have been involved in crimes to help fund Islamic groups, the report said.

The legislation would allow potential terror targets such as public transport, places of worship and shops to install surveillance cameras for the first time and police would be able to hold terror suspects for up to six days, from the current four.

Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy has led efforts to strengthen anti-terror laws in France after the July attacks which killed 52 people on London's transit system.
