Special probe into Iran plane crash

TEHRAN, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- Iran has ordered a special investigation into the crash of a military plane during an emergency landing Tuesday that killed at least 116 people.

The transport plane was carrying 94 people when it crashed into an apartment building in Chabahar.

All 94 people on board were killed, along with more than 20 residents of the apartment building. Another 90 people were injured, the Islamic Republic News Agency reports.

Many of the passengers were journalists traveling to southeast Iran to cover military war games. Hossein Shariatmadari, managing director of the Persian daily Kayhan, said some of his reporters had called before takeoff because the plane was delayed by technical problems. Shariatmadari said investigators should look into whether that problem was resolved before take off.

Reza Talaie-Nik of the Defense Committee of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission said all factors will be looked at.

A special judge has been assigned to the investigation.
