BAGHDAD, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- In his first full day on trial for the deaths of 143 people, former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein exhibited major mood swings, CNN reported Tuesday.
The report said during Monday's eight hours of proceedings, Saddam at some times appeared carefree and even happy, while at other times was hunched over tensely with his foot tapping the floor rapidly.
He and seven other men are on trial for the revenge slayings of 143 Shiite Muslims in 1982 in a town north of Baghdad following an attempt on Saddam's life.
During a break, Saddam could be seen laughing with his defense team, including Former Qatari Justice Minister Najib Nuaimi and Khalil al-Dulaimi. Former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark, Saddam's defense adviser, was standing by, listening.
But by the end of the day, Saddam would furiously throw papers to the ground and stand up, and at one point, court guards took him by the shoulders to return him to his seat.
