Amnesty raps Rice over CIA flights

BRUSSELS, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- Amnesty International Monday said U.S. Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice is wrong about CIA flights transporting terror suspects through Europe.

The human rights organization published information collected from U.S. public records that six planes owned or leased by the CIA had used European airports as transit points over 800 times, including some 50 stops at Shannon Airport in Ireland.

The information seems to contradict at least one alleged Rice statement. Last week Rice assured Irish Foreign Minister Dermot Ahern that such flights had not gone through Shannon, Ahern told reporters.

"Secretary Rice is either misinformed or is part of an ongoing orchestrated effort by the administration to mislead the American people and the world community," said Amnesty International U.S.A. Executive Director Dr. William F. Schulz.
