BAGHDAD, Dec. 4 (UPI) -- The defense team for the genocide and war crimes trial of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein is being coached to seek delays by a former U.S. attorney general.
Human rights activist Ramsey Clark last week discussed stalling the proceedings by inviting a new international lawyer to take part, and suggested challenging the legitimacy of prosecution witnesses, The Times of London reported Sunday.
In the first of a series of scheduled prosecutions, Saddam is accused of killing more than 140 Shiite Muslims after a failed assassination attempt against him in 1982. He faces death if convicted.
Clark, 77, served under President Lyndon Johnson from 1967-1969. He was also involved in the defense of Slobodan Milosevic, the former Yugoslav president now on trial for war crimes at the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia in the Hague.
