Record travel forecast despite fuel cost

WASHINGTON, Nov. 22 (UPI) -- U.S. motorists, unmindful of gasoline prices, are expected to take to the roads in record numbers for the Thanksgiving holidays.

A gallon of regular unleaded gas averages $2.20 a gallon, down about 10 cents from a week earlier but is up 25 cents from a year ago, says the U.S. Energy Department. That's the highest ever in November, reports USA Today.

AAA, a travelers' advocacy group, expects about 37.3 million people to travel at least 50 miles from home this holiday, up from 37.2 million last year. More than 80 percent of the travel will be by a motor vehicle.

"It's hard to tell Grandma we're not coming to see you because it takes $50 to fill up your tank instead of $40," says AAA spokesman Justin McNaull.

But weather may affect travel this week. A powerful storm was expected to rake the East Coast, followed by high winds and cold temperatures.
