Judge postpones ruling on DeLay charges

AUSTIN, Texas, Nov. 22 (UPI) -- The Texas judge who heard arguments on dismissing the charges against former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay says he will rule in two weeks.

Senior Judge Pat Priest also said that if the case goes forward a trial is unlikely until next year, CNN reported Tuesday. DeLay has asked for a quick trial.

"I had a pretty good idea 24 hours ago what I thought about this case," Priest said. "Having listened to some pretty good lawyers, I'm confused."

DeLay, one of the most powerful Republican politicians in the country, stepped down as majority leader when he was indicted but continues to represent his Texas district.

His lawyers argued a Texas law barring corporate contributions to local campaigns did not take effect until 2003, so the transfer of $190,000 from the Republican National Committee in 2002 was not a violation. They also say the transfer did not violate the law in any case since the money returned to Texas was not the same cash given to the RNC.
