Small bomb sent to Hong Kong newspaper

HONG KONG, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- A Hong Kong newspaper office has received a threatening letter and a gift box that exploded when a secretary opened it, injuring her slightly.

Police Tuesday appealed for information on the person who sent the box with a small bomb inside, along with a bouquet of flowers, to the office of the Chinese-language Ming Pao newspaper Monday, the South China Morning Post reported.

An unsigned letter accompanying the box demanded that the newspaper donate $3.8 million to a government charity organization within three days or face more serious consequences.

The writer did not explain the reason for the attack, saying the editor should know what he had done.

Chief editor Cheung Kin-bor said the newspaper had identified several recent reports that might have offended someone, but he said none was controversial enough to justify the bombing.

The attack has shocked the public, as Hong Kong's media are quite outspoken and violent attacks are rare.
