Pol apologizes for R.I. governor remarks

PROVIDENCE, R.I., Nov. 8 (UPI) -- A Rhode Island political consultant has apologized to the governor Tuesday for remarks about extramarital affairs aired on his television show.

Guy Dufault, a former chairman of the state Democratic Party, joked about having information that could bring Republican Gov. Donald Carcieri down, the Providence Journal reported. He later said that he was only doing a sound check and did not intend the remarks to be broadcast.

"The comments were never meant to be public and clearly I did not intend for them to go out over the airwaves," Dufault said in a prepared statement.

Carcieri said that Dufault's apology was not adequate.

The governor has been married for 40 years to his high school sweetheart, who stood beside him Monday as he denounced Dufault. On the television show, Dufault said he had the names of past "comattas," using an Italian slang word for girlfriends.

Dufault's major clients include the Narragansett Indians, who want to open a casino in Rhode Island, and an anti-Carcieri union coalition. His television show is a half hour in a talk format that he produces and pays for out of his own pocket.
