No pardon for Rabin assassin

TEL AVIV, Israel, Nov. 4 (UPI) -- Israeli President Moshe Katsav says there will be no pardon for Yigal Amir, who assassinated Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin in 1995.

Katsav said Amir "has no right to clemency," and said he would recommend to the next president not to allow the subject of a reduced sentence for Amir to come up for consideration, the Jerusalem Post reported.

Katsav, speaking at the President's Conference on Israeli Democracy, said he deplored the fact that Rabin Memorial Day commemorations keep generating more controversy each year.

"Rabin Memorial Day should be one of consensus in which we all put our differences aside," Katsav said.
