Israel: Iranian missiles could reach Rome

TEL AVIV, Israel, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom claims Iran has missiles capable of carrying a nuclear weapon as far as Rome.

Shalom made the statement Tuesday while meeting with Italian Foreign Minister Gianfranco Fini, the Israeli newspaper Yediot Aharonot reported on its Web site.

Iran has said it would continue its nuclear program, despite attempts by several European countries to convince it to stop. Iran Wednesday recalled ambassadors from the United Nations, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and several other countries -- reportedly because they were to be replaced with officials expected to take a harder line on the subject of Iran's nuclear ambitions.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad recently said Israel should be destroyed.

Fini told a press conference following their meeting that should Iran acquire nuclear weapons, it would severely threaten not only Israel, but the entire international community, Yediot Aharonot reported. He said the U.N. Security Council must deal with the Iranian matter as soon as possible.

Shalom said Israel would do all it can to stop Iran's nuclear program, but only diplomatically.
