TAMPA, Fla., Oct. 28 (UPI) -- The Pentagon has opened a preliminary investigation into contract-related allegations against the top general of the U.S. Special Operations Command.
Gen. Bryan Brown was accused of improperly influencing acquisition and contracting decisions, the Tampa Tribune said. SoCom, the military unit charged with leading the nation's war on terrorism, is based at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa.
The allegations were contained in an anonymous four-page letter sent to the offices of Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., and Rep. C.W. Bill Young, R-Fla., and to the Pentagon's inspector general, the agency's investigative arm.
The letter accused Brown of directing lucrative defense contracts to friends and former SoCom commanders, violating federal spending laws and interfering with internal investigations, the St. Petersburg Times said.
Brown called the allegations baseless but said they raised enough questions to warrant a further look by an outside agency.
