Muslim extremists protest anti-Islam play

CAIRO, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- Muslim extremists hurled stones at a Christian church in Alexandria, Egypt, Friday to protest a play which they deemed harmful to Islam.

Security sources told UPI more than 2,000 protesters took to the streets of Alexandria after Friday prayers chanting anti-Christian slogans and denouncing the play which they consider humiliating to Islam.

The angry protesters shouting "Allah Akbar (God is great) marched on St. George Church in central Alexandria where the play is being performed and hurled stones, smashing windows.

They also called for an apology from Coptic Pope Shenouda for allowing the performance and punishing the clerics who produced the play.

The protesters clashed with security forces who tried to prevent them from reaching the church. Additional forces were called to the scene to avert a possible outbreak of sectarian clashes.
