Former 9/11 Commission wants change at FBI

WASHINGTON, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- Former members of the 9/11 Commission regret recommending that the FBI remain in charge of domestic intelligence.

They released a report Thursday on the functioning of intelligence agencies and said that FBI Director Robert Mueller should have done more to change the agency's culture.

"All 10 of us were very favorably impressed with Bob Mueller ... and his plans and his goals and what he wanted to accomplish in the FBI," former Republican Sen. Slade Gorton said. "Very bluntly, at this point, we are seriously disappointed with its progress not just after 9/11, but after our report."

The commission is now a private group, The 9/11 Public Discourse Project.

Thomas Kean, the former New Jersey governor who chaired the commission, said its members did not realize the level of resistance to change within the FBI.

In the report, the group gave the FBI poor marks in improving intelligence analysis, sharing information with local law enforcement officials, creating stable leadership and modernizing its technology.
