WASHINGTON, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. Trent Lott, R-Miss., said he may end up supporting Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers even though he has doubts, a report said Wednesday.
"More than likely, at some point, I'll be satisfied," Lott told The Hill. In an MSNBC interview earlier this month, Lott said he was "not comfortable" with Miers' nomination because of conservative opposition and his past, unsatisfactory dealings with her.
Meanwhile, Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., blasted Miers' responses to a Judiciary Committee questionnaire as "disappointing, spare and unilluminating."
Miers' nomination depends on how many Senate Republicans join conservative critics determined to bring her down, The Christian Science Monitor reported.
Just six GOP Senators could derail the nomination. But observers said Democrats, who fear a more conservative replacement, could be the key to Miers approval.
"The great irony is that she might be saved by Democratic votes," Jonathan Turley, a George Washington University law professor, told the newspaper.
