Lebanon PM wants good relations with Syria

BEIRUT, Lebanon, Oct. 12 (UPI) -- Prime Minister Fouad Siniora stressed Wednesday that Lebanon seeks to have the best relations with neighboring Syria on the basis of mutual respect.

"The brotherly relations with Syria should continue and should always be good relations," Siniora said.

Siniora, however, criticized his Syrian counterpart Naji Otari for leaking to the Syrian press that he (Siniora) tried to call him three times lately but the Syrian official never answered his calls.

"I am very surprised because according to diplomatic etiquette and decencies no leak of such information should occur," Siniora said.

The two countries are awaiting the results of an international investigation into the Feb. 14 assassination of Lebanon's former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. Syria and its Lebanese allies, including President Emile Lahoud, were largely held responsible by the opposition for Hariri's slaying.
