CHICAGO, Oct. 11 (UPI) -- Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan called for inclusion of Latinos, Indians, women and gays in Saturday's Millions More Movement march in Washington.
"If we don't make the movement inclusive, then we minimize the potential of leveraging the power of black, brown, red and poor," to "change the harsh reality of the poor in the United States of America and elsewhere," Farrakhan told the Chicago Tribune.
Farrakhan, 72, has been on a three-month, 23-city tour to promote the Millions More Movement, which gained momentum from government recovery failures in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
Even so, Farrakhan raised eyebrows by suggesting that New Orleans levees were bombed to destroy black neighborhoods.
While Farrakhan initially refused to include gay speakers in Saturday's upcoming march, he relented during the weekend, the newspaper said.
Farrakhan said comments by Millions More Movement Executive Director and Baptist minister Willie Wilson that "lesbianism is about to take over our community" should not be allowed to hold back the movement.
