Former MLB player charged with assault

CHICAGO, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Former Major League Baseball player Scott Spiezio is accused of assaulting a cabdriver in a fare dispute.

The incident occurred early Friday after the former Seattle Mariners third baseman and a female companion, model Jennifer Pankratz, took a cab from the House of Blues to the Westin Hotel on Michigan Ave., the Chicago Tribune reported.

Police spokesman David Bayless said Spiezio argued with the driver over the credit card fare. During the argument, Pankratz allegedly reached through the cab's partition for the credit card, grabbed it and broke driver's glasses.

When police arrived, the driver accused the pair of taking his cell phone.

They were taken into custody after the phone rang in Pankratz's purse.

Pankratz was charged with battery and criminal damage to property, and Spiezio was charged with theft, criminal damage to property and simple assault.
