LOS ANGELES, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- A human rights conference at a Los Angeles high school was organized by a group with strong ties to the Church of Scientology, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Stephen Strachan, principal of Jordan High School, said he knew some of the organizers were Scientologists but did not know of Youth for Human Rights' relationship to the church until the Church of Scientology was listed on publicity materials as a co-sponsor.
When Strachan and other school officials learned of the connection, they negotiated an agreement to remove any mention of the Church of Scientology from literature. They also sent letters to parents saying students would need permission to attend the event.
Last year, the Los Angeles School District warned schools against adopting an anti-drug program developed by the church.
