Some Republicans returning DeLay PAC funds

WASHINGTON, Sept. 30 (UPI) -- Two Republicans say they will return funds from a Tom DeLay-affiliated group, but other U.S. congressmen plan to keep the money they say was raised legally.

The GOP is trying to determine the exact political fallout from the indictment of DeLay, a U.S. representative from Texas, while Democrats crow the charges reflect a GOP "culture of corruption."

Reps. Jeb Bradley, R-N.H., and Heather Wilson, R-N.M., said they would return monies from DeLay's Americans for a Republicans Majority political action committee, others said this PAC has not been implicated in the Texas scandal.

DeLay was indicted this week by a grand jury looking into possible illegal use of corporate funds in Texas state elections. DeLay's ARMPAC -- a broader program -- has not been charged with wrongdoing.

Rep. Henry Bonilla, R-Texas, told USA Today: "Everyone has to do what they think is best for their political future. If you're afraid of keeping Tom DeLay's PAC money, you're probably afraid of your own shadow."

Bonilla has received some $24,000 from ARMPAC since 1994, the newspaper said.
