Britain urges cooperation in Hariri probe

LONDON, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- Britain called on Syria Wednesday to cooperate with the international investigation into the slaying of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

Chief investigator Detlev Mehlis, a German prosecutor, went to Syria Tuesday where he reportedly interviewed senior Syrian security officials who were responsible for Lebanon's security at the time of Hariri's Feb. 14 assassination in a massive Beirut explosion.

"We regret that Mehlis's mission took a long time to kick off in Damascus, but we are happy he is there now and urge the Syrian authorities to cooperate with him fully, just like we did," the spokesman said.

"It is very important to allow Mehlis to complete his investigation because it is important to achieve justice in the region," the spokesman added.

He also urged Syria to take clear steps to boost peace efforts in the Middle East and to tighten control over its border with Iraq.
